Bows

The rainbow has always been a recurring motif in my work, a symbol layered with meaning, history, and emotion. It carries the weight of identity, resilience, and transformation. For the LGBTQ+ community, it is a banner of pride, a declaration of visibility and solidarity. For others, it represents fleeting beauty, a promise, a phenomenon that is both ephemeral and full of wonder. The rainbow is also tied to mythology and folklore the bridge between worlds, the path to hidden gold, the divine sign of hope after a storm.

In Bows, I explore the act of repetition, painting the arc of the rainbow over and over again, not just as an image but as a process of mastery and discovery. Through this continual revisiting, I investigate the materiality of paint itself and how marks build, layer, and shift; how texture and colour interact to create movement and depth. The bow becomes both a structure and a gesture, a constant within an ever-changing practice.

This work is about persistence and reinvention, about finding new ways to engage with a familiar form. It speaks to the nature of painting as both a technical and emotional pursuit and how we return to certain motifs, drawn to them for reasons we do not always understand, exploring them until they reveal something new. The rainbow, like the act of making itself, is a reminder of transition, transformation, and the spaces between.
