My Between Space
My Between Space — Navigating the Boundaries of Perception
My Between Space explores the shifting boundaries between the physical and metaphysical, mapping the tension between tangible reality and the unseen dimensions of memory, emotion, and spirituality. Rooted in quantum physics, mysticism, and personal introspection, I navigate this ambiguous terrain as a tourist, capturing fleeting moments between reality and imagination. "The Field," a concept central to my practice, exists at the threshold of perception, where the known world dissolves into something more fluid and primal. Time, identity, and physicality lose their fixed meanings and become open to reinterpretation.
Through multilayered assemblages of wood, mixed media, and paint, I construct dynamic interactions of texture, form, and symbolism. Organic, rounded shapes crafted from natural wood evoke both humour and sensuality, inviting physical engagement. They reference the body, its softness and weight, its capacity for pleasure and vulnerability. In contrast, a dark glossy void disrupts the composition, an aperture into the unknown. This rupture, surrounded by swirling rainbow hues, embodies curiosity, anticipation, and unease. It invites the viewer to gaze inward and encounter the self in a state of transition.
Weathered, fragmented wood encircles the void, mirroring cycles of destruction and renewal. This reflects my own journey of transformation, healing, and self-discovery, a reassembling of identity from fractured memories, inherited narratives, and lived experience. I embrace imperfection and incompleteness as fundamental to existence. The interplay between the rough textures of decay and the fluid vibrancy of colour suggests a state of constant becoming, where the self is never fixed but continuously evolving.
At its core, my practice interrogates the act of looking, the nature of perception, and the layers through which we construct meaning. I turn inward, confronting unexamined spaces within, capturing the voids that demand reflection and ultimately transformation. These voids exist not as absences but as charged spaces, portals to deeper consciousness and the unseen forces that shape our internal landscapes. They invite the viewer to sit in uncertainty, embrace ambiguity, and question the rigid structures that define selfhood.
Blurring the boundaries between sculpture, painting, and narrative, my work disrupts conventional artistic structures, creating a dialogue that is both deeply personal and universally resonant. "The Field" serves as a metaphor for human experience, where clarity and confusion coexist and reality is shaped by the interplay of the physical and the unseen. It is a place of liminality and transition, where transformation becomes possible through surrender.
I challenge perceptions, bridging humour and heartbreak, reality and fiction, intimacy and distance. My work invites viewers to become tourists in their own inner worlds, to confront the boundaries that define existence, and to reconsider the mysteries beyond the reach of the five senses. Resistant to static representation, the reflective surface of the void ensures that each viewer becomes part of the work itself. The image they see within it is not just a reflection but a fleeting imprint, an ephemeral moment of recognition, a personal memento of their time within The Field.
Art, for me, is an act of reclamation, a radical re-authoring of the narratives we inherit, internalise, and sometimes struggle to escape. Through my practice, I carve out space for the unspoken, the obscured, and the in-between. I invite the viewer to step into this space, embrace their own uncertainty, and discover new ways of seeing, feeling, and understanding the shifting landscapes of their own existence.
